I saw this while shopping for a black dress. On an unrelated side note, I have about 20 black dresses but buy a new one about once a year. I don't know why, it's an addiction to black dresses I think. Therapy is in my future.
Back to this great deal. So yes, the dress is $500 and this blog is dedicated to being thrifty but if you've got a modest budget, a $500 wedding dress is still a deal. Plus, it's naturally slimming, it looks really comfortable, and it's beautiful. Click here to order.

How much does it cost to be a Bridesmaid?
At my wedding, I knew I had to think fast. We planned our whole wedding in three months and I didn't want to burden my bridesmaids with details and a big price tag. I decided black formal gowns were fine and they could wear their own. Many bought their dresses on clearance, borrowed something, or used one they already had. The only requirement was it be long, black, and formal. Done! They all looked gorgeous and the pictures turned out so pretty too. They all wore their own shoes and I bought them necklaces as a present.
Read the article below and consider the cost of a bridesmaid. If you're a bride, what can you do to make it easier on your wedding party?

How to wear your wedding dress... again
So I have to say, I was never very excited about my wedding dress. I went shopping by myself one afternoon and was so intimidated by the amount of dresses, the cost, the formality of the process... I wanted it to just be done so I picked one out and bought it. Not one of my better decisions but there it was, a simple ivory halter dress on sale and ready to wear. I hate shopping, especially for things like this. Strange maybe since a lot of girls dream about their wedding for years, but for me, once the day finally came to find the dress, I was over it.
Now, I have my dress and I didn't even bother to preserve it. I literally threw it in the washing machine with some towels and cleaned it the other day. It's in great shape but really, will my daughters wear this thing? Probably not. I'm thinking I may alter it into a strapless cocktail dress, maybe wear it to Vegas with my husband and renew our vows with Elvis.
Here are some pictures of my dress:

So my idea is to turn my dress into something like this (except in an ivory color) which is a little bit more modern and fun. Plus, like I said, if that trip to Vegas ever happens I will save a load of money on buying a new dress.
Want to know how to do this yourself? You are brave if you said yes. Me? I'll be taking mine to a seamstress but if you'd like to attempt it yourself, try this link. Step by step (sort of) on how to go from wedding dress to cocktail dress. Good luck!

Get Kate's wedding dress for less than $200!
After having zero interest in the Royal Wedding, I got sucked into watching it this morning and was totally into the dress, the kiss, the music... I love those long sleeves, in fact that whole dress was gorgeous. But back to the sleeves, I think more people should consider it. Everyone goes for the strapless, be different and think about lace sleeves, so pretty! And even if you have the strapless, think about the sleeves on the shawl. Here's what I found for my budget bride friends today, a version of Princess Kate's dress for less than $200.

Make your own wedding dress - Easy ideas
So I'm putting some ideas together. I've looked at patterns and fabrics, clearance racks and ebay, and I think I've figured out how a girl on a tight budget could actually make her own wedding dress with little sewing ability and at a budget price. Let's aim for less than $100. Remember, most people have more than $500 to spend on a wedding, but everyone is looking for ways to save. Maybe making your own wedding dress isn't something you'd want to do. That's great! But there are lots of women out there who really don't have the cash to spend hundreds on a dress, then the food, invites, pictures, cake, music, flowers, oh my gosh the list never ends.
The idea is mix and match fancy tops with fancy bottoms. Add the details, add the veil, add the jewelry. Piece together the masterpiece! First the tops. Here are some possibilities I found. The tanks are all from either Body Central or Victoria's Secret. You can use these, add the skirt and be done. But to make it more personal and more of a wedding gown, buy a nice white spandex tank top and pick your favorite tutorial below. Think of the tank top as your frame. The blank canvas for your bridal gown masterpiece!

As far as making this stuff goes, I'm not a seamstress either, but some of this I think you could handle. I think even I could handle it. It's about breaking it down into parts. Taking on one project at a time. First of all, you'll need a mannequin, try searching thrift stores or garage sales. Hit up Craigslist or Ebay too. Here's one from Amazon.com
that might be a good deal.

Now, let's break down the ideas for the skirt part of the wedding gown. There are many options, depending on what kind of dress you're going for. The most popular are tulle, bustle, and sheath or A-line. We'll take a look on how to make those three types.
Here's a free peasant skirt pattern. It looks fairly easy too and you can't beat free.
Got 20 minutes? Here's a 20 minute Simple Skirt Tutorial, would be better for a shorter skirt, maybe just below the knee.

Gotta love something that's called "super easy." Here's a super easy skirt tutorial from Boulevard Designs.
How about a circle skirt? The fabric is literally cut in the shape of a circle which creates instant volume but also allows the skirt to move and is very elegant. This pattern can work for a wedding dress assuming you're not adding a bunch of extra stuff under the skirt like a petticoat. You'll see what I mean when you click on this link. And remember, square dancing is cool so be nice. Here's another circle skirt tutorial from Making Things.
Take for instance this tutorial on how to make a tulle skirt. I think I could handle this and the cost is very reasonable.
How about a cute bustle skirt? This crafty lady made one for her daughter in an hour. Come on, if she can do it, you can do it! Her tutorial is nice and easy too. You may, however, want to make yours a little bigger.
Here is probably the best tutorial on how to make the bustle skirt. She made it for a theater performance I think so the fabric is obviously not a traditional wedding look but she's offered great pictures and instructions on how to make this design.
Now, the A-Line skirt which is probably the second easiest after the tulle skirt. Below are some easy tutorial links showing exactly how you can transform a simple A-line skirt a gorgeous part of your wedding gown.
Over at Ruffles and Roses, she's got an easy A-line gathered skirt tutorial. It's really cute. Remember, you'll be making yours at any length you want. The tutorial gets you through the gathering on top, how to cut the fabric, where to put your seam, etc. Make yours long, short, whatever!
Here, a talented contributor talks about how finding fabric that already contains an intricate pattern can save you money and time down the road.
If all of this seems like too much to handle, remember, it is perfectly acceptable and equally as creative to find a pattern and have a seamstress do the actual sewing. It's still a dress designed by you and will most definitely cost you less than off the rack at a boutique. Click here for some more ideas on finding a pattern.

Free flower girl dress!
I know you have this stuff around the house or at the very least, your friends or family do. If you are having a beach wedding or a picnic or park style reception, why not have the flower girls wear something light and casual? Try this idea, it's the Pillowcase Dress.
![]() | |
Don't want to make one? Buy this one here. |
Needle and thread
Pillowcase
1 yard of thick ribbon or extra fabric
Two 6 inch elastic bands
Two 10 inch ribbons (or extra fabric will work too)
- Wash, dry, starch, and iron the pillowcase.
- Measure the desired length of the dress, beginning at the girl's collarbone. The wide hem of the pillowcase will be the bottom of the dress with this dress pattern. Make a pencil or chalk line on the pillowcase to reflect the desired length plus 1 inch.
- Mark cutting lines for the armholes, shaped like the letter "J" on the left side of the dress and a backward "J" on the right side of the dress. These should be 3 to 4 inches deep, depending on the size of the child. (This is a sleeveless dress.)
- Fold and press both sides of the top (neck) part of the pillowcase 1/4 inch from the top and again at 3/4 inches.
- Stitch along the first fold to make a casing for the elastic; the casing should be like a tunnel.
- Thread 6 inches of elastic through each casing and secure the ends with a safety pin temporarily. Stitch across the ends of each casing to hold the elastic in place. It will gather and form a neckline.
- Fold, press and pin the arm holes using the ribbon as binding. The ends of the ribbon will extend past the edges of the armholes to be tied at the shoulders.
- Sew the seam.
- Sew the ribbon or extra fabric along the bottom seam for a decorative touch.

Valentine's Day Wedding!
Don't judge, my husband and I did this. Here's why it worked, we needed to bump up our wedding date and everything was booked. Looking at the calendar, we noticed Valentine's Day was a Saturday and we thought it would be booked for sure at the church and hotel we were looking at. Turns out, everything was wide open. I'm guessing it was because everyone thought it would be way too cheesy to get married on Valentine's Day. Hey, maybe so, but my husband never forgets our anniversary!
Here's an example of a $500 Valentine's Day wedding:
Location: Anywhere with a cozy romantic atmosphere. A party room at a nice restaurant, a rooftop, someone's home- just some place out in the open where the stars can be seen in all their glory.
Bride and bridal party: The bride in a simple evening dress and if the weather is cold, add a velvet or silk wrap. I think a formal gown (think prom) would be better than a traditional wedding dress although traditional would be beautiful too.
Groom and groomsmen: The groom in a classic black suit would be perfect and the groomsmen in formal white button down shirts with black pants. If it’s cold, have hem throw on the matching jackets.
Ceremony: For seating arrangements, rent or borrow folding chairs and set them up in two blocks thus forming a center isle. Arrange for white Christmas lights to be strung around any bushes or pillars and dig out the artificial green Christmas trees, keep them plain green with only white lights. Using lots of candles will also add atmosphere, use as many red/pink/purple accents as possible. The bride should carry a small bouquet of flowers and find someone to serenade you with a saxophone. Depending where you're putting most of your money- maybe some standards and jazz on the iPod speakers would be perfect!
Reception: Visualize candles on all of the tables with cake, bottles of champagne, fruit, and crackers and cheese. Some jazz music in the background and your set.
Final thoughts: Music is a very inexpensive way to set the mood, especially being outside, you’re also going to want to drown out any traffic or other outdoor noises. Have CD players placed all over your reception area, some suggestions: Anything by Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Tony Bennett.
Budget
The dress $60 - Prom dress bought on sale, borrowed a wrap from aunt
Groom’s attire $30 - Bought white dress shirt, used own tie and suit
Accessories $10 - No necklace, bought earrings on sale
Flowers $10 - Bride walked down the aisle with single red rose, groom had rose boutonniere (flowers bought that afternoon)
Pictures $50 - Hired college student, used three friends as well, uncle taped wedding
Music $10 - Recorded jazz music playing during dinner and reception
Food and drinks $250 (this is a perfect reception for Italian food!) It’s a late night wedding so just desserts, wine, crackers, cheese and wedding cake are served
Decorations $30 - Rose petals scattered on tables, tea light candles and silver dessert platters on all the tables, tables had white tablecloths, chairs each had a red ribbon tied to them
Invitations $30 Made on groom’s computer
Miscellaneous $20 Always a good idea to have a little left over for the unexpected expense

Wedding dress game
Wow, I got lost on this little game for an hour. It's fun and a good way to dress shop when the weather is too cold outside, like it is nine months out of the year here in Minnesota. You can pick accessories, hairstyles, necklines, gloves or no gloves, shoes, etc. Have fun ladies!

Make your own wedding dress
Seriously lady? Make my own wedding dress? Have you gone completely insane? Not exactly. Look, I can't sew a thing either but some people can, or know someone who can, and sometimes even considering the idea of creating your own gown can save you money. What's that saying? Necessity is the mother of invention. You'd love to spend $5000 on a gown but that's impossible so we need a new game plan. Consider the following story, this extremely talented woman wanted an extremely expensive dress. Instead of buying it, she made a knock-off and it is gorgeous. Look at these side by side photos!
But what do you do if you can't sew? Consider heading to a fabric store and browsing through their dress patterns. I did this all through high school for proms, homecoming dances, Winter Wonderland, etc. I wanted a certain type of dress and I didn't want a dress that looked like every other dress I saw in all of the stores. Actually, I was probably going to have a hard time finding what I wanted anywhere in a regular formal dress shop. I wanted something classic, black, kind of Audrey Hepburn. But that's not exactly what was in stock for sixteen year old girls in the mid-90's.
So I had to improvise. I first browsed through magazines, found some ideas, then I would draw a design on a piece of paper, take that to the fabric store, find a pattern similar or mix two patterns together to find the exact look, and I took my idea to a seamstress. She made my dress and with the cost of the fabric, the whole thing was around $60. Not too bad for a dress that was totally original, exactly what I wanted, and didn't break the bank. And really, how cool is it to say you designed and created your own wedding dress?
There are so many resources out there, free stuff too! You can download a wedding dress pattern for $4.99, from big names like Vogue. Here's a link to get you started, but really, a quick google search and you're on your way.
If I could go back in time, I would absolutely create my own dress. My whole wedding, with 250 people and a budget, had to be planned completely in three short months. I do not recommend that kind of stress. But looking back now, I wish I would have taken the time to really look into other options. For instance, the blue dress with straps in the picture, this is a classic look that I believe could be replicated for a wedding dress. In fact, I'm going to try it this summer when I get my sewing/crafting room up and running. Think it's do-able?
