Other suggestions I can offer:
  • Bring nothing that lights up or makes noise.  This may seem like an obvious tip but sometimes it can be hard to find a toy that doesn't make noise.  Think stuffed animals and paper with crayons.
  • Speaking of art supplies, make sure you keep it to just crayons.  Ink can stain their clothes and washable crayons are easy to remove if, let's just say, Aunt Rita's purse gets scribbled on.
  • Try to buy a brand new toy.  It's new, it's exciting, it's different, and will keep their attention longer.
  • Only bust out the toy when you have to.  What I mean is try to use it when all else fails.  Keep them occupied as long as you can with anything else and when the meltdown is starting to take shape- grab the toy.  Keep other small toys in different pockets, use them when necessary.
