100% Free Invitations

You can have this invitation design absolutely
free if you want it.  Just send me an email!
I threw this together today as an example of how a bride on a budget can still have cute invitations.  I did this on my computer, just Microsoft Word.  If by chance you like this invitation, you can have it absolutely free.  Just email me your names, dates, etc. and I'll send it back to you ASAP and absolutely free.  (I'm not a graphic designer so I can't charge folks money like I am one can I?  Nope, I can't.)

Now the next step might not be free, but you can still save a bunch of bucks.  Upload your design to 123print.com or any other online printer and scale it down to 5x7 or whatever size you'd like (I'd recommend the smallest size you're comfortable with since anything around 5x7 will cost you extra in postage) and order your prints.  You can usually get a deal on matching letterhead or postcards (which I'd highly recommend you use for thank-you notes) and make sure you check out any free shipping promotions they have going on as well.  I did a quick estimate on how much it would be if I ordered 50 of these in an approximate 4.5" by 5.5" size at $35.00.

Don't want to do your own design or you're looking for something even easier?  123print.com also has wedding templates where you simply type in the necessary information, verify the info, order your quantity, and you're done. Priced out, this option is cheaper too. You can get 50 invites for less than $30.00 and that includes free shipping.  Not bad at all.

Want a unique and cute invitation design but don't want to do it yourself?  Seed to Sprout has some great ideas with invitations starting at just $9.00.

Make a Barbie dress from a sock, Part 2

I posted this last week as a way for brides to keep the little ones busy during the reception or just as a fun kids craft on a rainy day.  This week has been spring break for our kids and we decided to make a whole box full of these recycled kid socks.

This time around we used glitter glue to dazzle the dolls up and used longer socks that let us make sleeves.  The girls also wanted to take the toe we cut off of the sock and use it as a hat.  I'm not sure this works that great but hey, they liked it and that's what it's all about!

This idea is free, easy, and requires very little supplies.  Here's the tutorial if you want the step by step.  Below are pictures of our newest creations.  These aren't high-end Barbie clothes but it's kind of fun way to put those unused-missing-its-mate socks that are taking up space in your dresser or closet.  Good last minute craft idea too and maybe a good activity for kids during your bridal shower or reception.  They can design their own wedding dress!

Easy, no mixer needed, banana bread recipe

Made this today and thought it would be great with the Bridal Shower Brunch recipe for crepes I posted earlier. This particular banana bread recipe is good for us because I can't have nuts and my husband hates them anyway.  Also, no need for a mixer which I love!  Makes it a little bit easier to whip up in a hurry.  Easy, cheap, and simple ingredients too!

 Banana Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 or 4 ripe bananas, smashed
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1 cup sugar (can easily reduce to 3/4 cup)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

Method

No need for a mixer for this recipe. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). With a wooden spoon, mix butter into the mashed bananas in a large mixing bowl. Mix in the sugar, egg, and vanilla. Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the mixture and mix in. Add the flour last, mix. Pour mixture into a buttered 4x8 inch loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour. Cool on a rack. Remove from pan and slice to serve.
Makes one loaf.

$4.00 Centerpiece

I needed a quick centerpiece idea for the $500 wedding class I was teaching and as I was shopping at Walmart, thinking about how much I really didn't want to run another errand, I noticed the craft section.  Sticking to my idea that all centerpieces should cost under $5.00, I grabbed a block of Styrofoam and started thinking about how I could pretty it up.  It cost about $2.99 and looking around, I noticed some autumn silk flowers on clearance, and grabbed a few bundles.  It's all coming together, I thought.  I snatched up four bundles at 25 cents each and we after a quick assembly, we had ourselves a centerpiece.

You'll need the following supplies:
1. Block of Styrofoam  (I used a long block but really you could use any shape, a small block or cone would look just as nice and maybe adding different shapes but using the same flowers would be cute.)
2. Silk/fabric flowers.  I used autumn colors because that was what I found on sale, but pick whatever combination looks best for you.  When in doubt, or if you're not 100% on what your colors are, go with all white.  All white flowers with silverware, a white table cloth, candles, and wine glasses is always beautiful.
3. Sharp craft scissors or wire cutters.  I used basic scissors at first and it was awful and dangerous.  Get something that is safe and efficient to use.

I cut the stems about three inches from the flower head.  You can always cut more if you want but you need some length in order to keep them sturdy inside the Styrofoam.

I arranged the flowers so that the colors were evenly distributed and the shape looked right.  There is room to arrange it so that tea lights can be mixed in with the flowers (I would absolutely use the fake battery-powered tea lights here, those real ones with start this whole thing on fire for sure.  You want a memorable party but that may be a little extreme.)

And that's it!  Don't mind my table setting above.  My family was actually cleaning up Lego's and vacuuming as I was trying to put a quick setting together.  Again, I'd use all white flowers or red rose buds with grass shoots instead of the harvest flowers although if you're doing a fall or Halloween decor, this might be perfect.  Up to you!  That's the fun of it!

Bridal shower brunch recipe

Recipe from StarTribune
Need a unique, easy, and affordable recipe idea for a bridal shower brunch?  Gotcha covered.  I made these this week for my family and they were awesome (and extremely easy).  The recipe makes quite a few of these but even doubling the recipe wouldn't add much cost.  The ingredients are very simple and cheap.  My suggestion would be setting up an electric skillet/hot plate on the kitchen table, making the crepes fresh (each crepe takes about 2 minutes on the skillet), put them on guests' plates and have a variety of toppings available such as strawberries, bananas, Nutella, whipped cream, blueberries, and powdered sugar.  These crepes are very filling but to add more to your banquet, set out a plate of muffins or use this great banana bread recipe and keep some juice and coffee available in the kitchen as well.

NUTELLA AND BANANA CRÊPES

Makes 18

• 1 c. all-purpose flour

• 1 tbsp. sugar

• 11/2 c. skim milk

• 2 eggs

• 1 tbsp. butter, divided

• Nutella and thin banana slices

• Strawberries and whipped cream, optional

Directions

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, milk and eggs; mix well.

In an 8-inch nonstick skillet, melt about 1 teaspoon butter over medium heat. Stir the batter; pour about 2 tablespoons into the center of the skillet. Lift and tilt the pan to evenly coat the bottom with the batter. Cook until the top appears dry; turn and cook 15 to 20 seconds longer, until the crêpe is just slightly firm. Remove to a wire rack.

Repeat with the remaining batter, adding the butter to the skillet as needed. When cool, stack the crêpes with waxed paper in between. (Plain-cooked crêpes can be stacked between sheets of waxed paper and refrigerated for 2 days or frozen for 1 month.)

When all the crêpes are made, spread 2 teaspoons Nutella, or more to taste, on the crêpe, top with banana slices to taste, fold the crêpe in half and then fold in half again, forming a triangle. Remove to a serving plate, and repeat with the remaining crêpes as needed. The crêpes also can be served with whipped cream and sliced strawberries, to taste, if desired.

Elope!

I feel like the word Elope is almost considered a dirty 4-letter word in the wedding industy. It really shouldn't be. But it's almost frowned upon.

Not by me, mind you.

But really, my clients almost whisper to me, I think we should consider an elopement... in a hush tone.

Honestly, if eloping is right for you, do it!

And if you do it like this, do it right NOW!

I've known Lisa for a long time, and I've known Jeff even longer. I love them, and seeing them happy and together is a perfect fairy tale ending (or is it, begining) for me!

Top 5 Feature: The Lovely Residence

Welcome to the new feature, the Top 5 Feature where fellow bloggers and budget-watchers share their top five tips on how to save money on a wedding or home remodel.

To debut this new feature, I called on my very good friend Nikki.  She is always working on a fun new project and her blog is full of inspiration.  She has great taste but is always looking for a good deal so everything she does with her new house feels like something that a person on a budget could do too.

Her wedding is one of my all time favorites.  It was so warm and comfortable, lots of friends and family talking and dancing all night, with a little wedding and romance mixed in.  She had some really fun and budget-friendly ideas and I asked if she'd share some of her clever ideas and pics.  You have to check out her blog too, she is so funny and creative.

http://thelovelyresidence.blogspot.com/

Here's Nikki and her Top 5...

Our 5 best money saving ideas

1. Program and Menu- We bagged the printed program. We figured the only thing it was good for was to distract our guests from the Bride and Groom show. Find an old board, slap on some chalkboard paint and put your inner artist to work. One of your friends must have an easel laying around and if not prop up your program on a table or shelf. The local printer wasn't getting a dime out of us, we did the same thing for the menu. Save the table space for the food!

That wheelbarrow you see in the corner
is holding quilts.  Guests grabbed a quilt
and spread it out on the beach to sit on during
the wedding.  Genius!

2. Wishing Tree- A white book with bells on it wasn't for us. We cut up some paper, tied on some ribbon and identified the resident plant as our "wishing tree." We keep all of our wishes in jar at home on the
shelf.

3. Hired Helped- Hire some students in your community to run the operation. We payed them cash and threw in some super cutie t shirts. It was a huge deal for us and them!

4. Pizza- We served pizza! We ordered from a local Gourmet Pizza place. We classied it up with a white table cloth and that's about it. Not one complaint about tough chicken or cold beans. It cost us a
whopping 3.00/person plus people could nibble all night- who doesn't like cold pizza?

5. Center Pieces- I am not a cake girl, doughnut please! We bought 20 terracotta pots for 1.05 each, slapped on some paint and decoupaged some photo copied pics of ourselves on the sides. The topper: charger plates on Christmas Clearance for 1.00/ each and piled on the dessert.

A very important P.S. 18 Dozen Doughnuts from a local bakery cost us 117.00 or .60/person.

20 things to do for spring break

My kids have been coming home for the past week telling me everything that their friends will be doing for spring break.  "My friend is going to horse camp!"  "My friend is going to Puerto Rico!"  Other kids were taking off for Mexico, Florida, and other fun trips.  We aren't going anywhere.  We are also on a tight budget right now so I couldn't just take everyone to the mall and go crazy.  We needed to get creative and decide what to do on a budget in a small town without a lot of activities.  I mapped out a plan that included a formula of one outing, one activity or craft, and one project (code word for chore) per day.  At the end of their break when they head back to school, they'd have some stories to tell, some art to show off, and a clean house to come home to.  Perfect!

Here's my game plan for the week:

Outings
Public Library
Matinee Movie (and yes, I sneak in my own fruit snacks)
Free concert at college
County History Museum
Humane Society
Mall of America (Free: window shopping and Lego World. Cheap: bead store and scoop of ice cream)
Movie theme night (Think "Bug's Life" with Dirt Dessert)
Hometown Bingo

Activities/Crafts
Make your own watercolors
Make a hand mold and remember this time
Have a homemade toy car race
Picasso Party (everyone gets a huge blank canvas, they draw their picture, then paint it!)
Make your own movie
Barbie doll fashion show with homemade dresses
Bleach-Pen T-shirts
Put on a puppet show with photo puppets

Projects
Organize closet, switch over clothes for new season
Match all socks
De-clutter dressers
Garbage hunt (everyone gets a Target bag and fills it up with any scraps of garbage, broken toys, junk mail, torn and damaged books, old magazines, etc.)
Everyone fills up one bag or box of toys, books, and clothes to donate to the thrift store

Make a Barbie dress from a sock

Not directly "wedding" related but pass this on to your sister so she can make one of these and keep your nieces happy at the wedding ceremony.  Hey, it's free to make, why not?

Leave it to a snow day to get me motivated to do a craft.  We got out the big basket of socks without a match.  We have a big basket full of these lonely socks who are without a mate.  Like the toddler socks version of a singles cruise.  So I grabbed a few and gave them a purpose.

Here's what you'll need:
  1. Clean old child's sock
  2. Scissors
  3. Glue
  4. Felt, ribbon, buttons, glitter glue (whatever you'd like to use for decorating your dress)

I cut the toe off of the sock
Then I tried it on the Barbie but realized that I didn't like the bottom hem.  So I took it off, folded the hem under, glued it down and made the bottom the top.
I glued on some details, just stuff I had, in this case green felt and then made a yellow flower for the belt.  I hot glued everything on, making sure it would come off and on the Barbie easily.
The finished product.  100% free and it took me ten minutes.  Doesn't get much easier than that.

Invitations for CHEAP

Some great ideas have just come my way in terms of invitations.  This is one of those really fun wedding-planning-activities but can be a hidden money-stealer if you're not careful.  Don't forget, each invite needs a stamp so you're not just paying for the invite and the envelope.  If you're keeping your guest list under control, stamps shouldn't be too bad.

Word of advice concerning RSVPs.  This is an email world now.  Everyone, including grandparents and long lost great aunts and uncles have an email address.  Do not, I repeat, do not spend money on RSVP cards and the stamps that you plop on them as a courtesy.  People can email your wedding website or email account.  They can email your parents, they can drop you a message on your wedding facebook page, they can even call you if they by chance do not have access to email.  There is no reason to spend a nickle on RSVP cards so be smart and savvy and have people email or call in their replies.

So we're keeping our guest list as small as possible, we've eliminated the RSVP concern, now it's on to the fun part: picking out the invitation design.  Check out these ideas:

Click here to buy this! Only $9
  1. Have a graphic design friend make you a unique invitation template.  I have at least ten friends on facebook that do graphic design work from home and if you want to reimburse them for their time, you'll still be getting a huge savings.  They may do it for free with a little plug of their website or Etsy shop on your wedding programs thanking them for their talents.  TheWeddingChicks.com also has some really cute and free invitation and save-the-date templates (see picture above) that you can customize and then take to your printer.

  2. Make them on your computer.  Check out Microsoft's templates and Microsoft Office online for more templates of wedding invitations.  Check out this cute "perfect pair" wedding template I found.  You can adjust the colors, font, background, etc.  Free, easy, and completed by you!

  3. You'll be printing these at a FedEx/Kinko's, small local printing shop, or online.  Vistaprint.com or 123print.com have cheap printing ideas.  I've heard of brides getting 100 prints for less than $14.  Lots of options there for printing your own designs and make sure to do a google search for coupon codes on free shipping too.  123print.com is currently offering free shipping on any purchase, no limits.

  4. Make your own!  Careful though, this can get REALLY expensive.  By the time you purchase the card stock, fancy pens and art supplies, you'll now have to sit down and put together 60 of these.  With all of the options above, consider those first before you dive into a time-sucker like this.

  5. Go green and go digital.  There is a case to be made for really cute online invites that are free, easy to access, easy for people to RSVP, and a nice way to share information on hotel reservations, the menu, pictures to share after the wedding, etc. Evite.com has some cute ideas.  If you'd like to skip the middle-man, do your own invite in a Word document and mail that as an attachment to your list.  It will be that much easier to RSVP too with your email address being right there.  You'll probably have every RSVP in before lunch!  Here's another great website called Greenvelope featuring a more personal approach to digital invitations, great designs too.

Just be creative and think outside the box.  Remember, you do not have to do what everyone else is doing. Go your own way!

I Do!

So, I love Colbie Calliat, I just do... and when I heard this song, I knew it would be a winner for a wedding, and for me to play over and over and over again.

But really, what a great first dance, or a cake cutting, or introduction song, maybe even a recessional song.

Easy entertainment idea for brides on a budget

I recently had a fellow blogger share her site with me and I discovered this great idea for keeping your guests entertained at the reception (especially if it's that awkward time between the ceremony and the dinner where the bridal party is taking pictures and the wedding guests don't know what to do).

Here's what you'll need:
  • Giant bed sheet or solid color blanket
  • Two tall ladders
  • Box of props (hats, wigs, beads, etc.)
  • Digital cameras (guests will bring their own)

Set up a homemade photo booth. Drape the giant bed sheet or blanket from two ladders and have some boxes filled with props like picture frames (minus the glass), hats, mustaches, giant jewelry, sunglasses, wigs, etc. Invite everyone to take pictures and share them on a wedding facebook page or have everyone email the pictures to you later and print them out when you have the time and money. Don't forget to mention on your invites that people should bring their cameras.  Great memory-maker!

My favorite prop ideas!
How cute are these?

See more pics of our new blog friend's photo booth below. This is another great free and easy idea for your wedding!

I want your ideas!

Did you make your own invites?  Tell me about it!
I'm on the lookout for wedding pictures that you'd be willing to share that may have some decor or recipe ideas that brides could replicate themselves in order to save money.  For example, were your centerpieces beautiful and maybe if you'd have had time, you could have put it together yourself and saved money?  How about sending me a picture of it?

What about music?  Did you hire someone to sing "your song" only to find out your cousin is an outstanding singer?  Please share your story!

What about picture?  Anyone shy away from hiring an expensive formal wedding photographer in favor of a lower cost but just as nice alternative?  Tell us about it!  Did you make your own programs?  Candy bar?  How about the flowers, did you save money by going with silk or buying them the day of the wedding?  What's the best deal you've ever heard a bride get on her dress?

I'm looking for design ideas, decorating inspiration, and mostly pictures with a few stories and suggestions.  Don't be shy!  Brides across the world need you.

Email heatherhenrykraabel@gmail.com or comment with your blog and idea below and let me know what you'd like to contribute.  Thanks friends!

Simple Thank You Idea

How great (and possibly free!) is this idea? One of the biggest tricks to saving money is to use every resource you have first before you think about spending any money. Some of those resources may come from very generous, creative, and loyal friends. Don't forget to do something for them to let them know you appreciate their support. These little mason jars filled with a little candy or some fancy pens and pencils, maybe nuts or bubblegum would be a cute little way to say thanks and is so much better than just a card. For more pics, check out the link below.

Save money on wedding pictures

Do you panic when you call photographers and get the prices for wedding pictures?  There are some ways to save.  Click here for some ideas.

Now, of course I'm all for saving money but there are things you should invest in and in my opinion, pictures are the one area where you may want to splurge.  Everything else will be gone (the cake, flowers, and that dress isn't going to fit forever) but the pictures will last a lifetime.  So think about putting some money into the pictures, just be wise with your money, get only what you NEED, and shop around for the best deal.  Look at the photo page (link is above) for more suggestions.

In the meantime, enjoy the video below.  It's less than a minute and so worth it.

SUPER easy wedding cake

You might be interested in reading some recent information I stumbled on from projectwedding.com, good info!

Average cost of wedding cake:

Wedding cake prices on the ultra-elaborately decorated wedding cakes seen on reality television shows or in photos from celebrity wedding can run into thousands of dollars. But according to The Bridal Association of America, the average cost for a wedding cake is $543 (this is based on 2006 figures and most likely is somewhat higher by now).

For a traditional two- or three-tiered cake with butter cream frosting, wedding cake prices generally range from about $5-6 per slice. Fancy fillings, ganache, marzipan and cream cheese icings will also increase wedding cake prices. And wedding cake prices go up when rolled fondant icing and decorations are used - handmade rolled fondant decorations, which have become very popular features on wedding cakes, are labor intensive and can add at least $1 or more per slice to the cost. Other decorations - sugar or fresh flowers, wedding cake toppers, etc. - are less expensive but also add to wedding cake prices. All of this doesn't include cake-cutting fees, which is sometimes an additional charge as well.

Keep in mind that wedding cake prices naturally rise along with the tiers or layers on the cake. As the cake gets higher, so does the price. Again, this is largely because of the time it takes to decorate a large cake and, importantly, to make sure that a multi-tiered cake will stay upright throughout the reception. Wedding cake prices usually include a separate charge for delivery and assembly, which can be up to $100 or more, depending on the size of the cake and the distance from the bakery to the reception site.

The cake you see in the picture is so easy and it really wouldn't take that much time or effort (or cost you over $500!)  You think I'm crazy for saying that I'm sure, but hear me out.  First, if you're sticking to the small wedding plan, you're looking at doing maybe eight of these cakes.  They can be single layer, placed on a platter, and serve as the centerpiece for each table.  You can do this, it's easy!

Think about the bragging rights you'll earn by boasting to everyone that you made your own cakes (and maybe your dress, the centerpieces, the programs and invites, your floral arrangement, and so on, and so on...)
