Some people want a small wedding because they simply can't afford a lavish ceremony and reception. Others just want a low-key wedding because that's their style. Recently I was invited to a wedding where the bride and groom specifically stated that they wanted no wedding gifts, instead they requested anyone inclined to give them a gift should make a donation to their chosen charity. They had everything they needed, so gifts for them weren't necessary. They had a passion for their cause and knew this would be a good way for others to contribute to the charity.
This is a noble idea, and one people should consider, but if you want to do something significant in another way, try this. Below is a bracelet created by women in Rwanda. From the Same Sky website:
SAME SKY’s initial project employs HIV+ women in Rwanda who survived the 1994 Genocide. Instead of a hand-out, we offer them a hand-up and a chance to rebuild their lives. Our bracelets are handmade with heart by these extraordinary women artisans.

Remember, weddings sometimes come with expectations of what is "supposed" to be done. Make it your own, make it matter to you!
