How to make your own butter cream frosting

Norpro 8 Piece Cake Decorating SetThis is seriously easy and DELICIOUS!  Tastes just like the bakery frosting they use on their sheet cakes.  I would highly recommend using this recipe to make your own wedding cake and investing a little cash into some cake decorating tools.  You don't need anything too fancy, but making your own cake will save you a lot of money.

How to make delicious butter-cream frosting
This butter-cream frosting recipe is similar to a recipe I found on the back of a bag of sugar but after making several batches of this frosting, I have made some improvements.  First of all you’ll absolutely need a mixer, this frosting is thick and creamy and tastes just like the stuff at the bakery instead of those small containers you can buy in the cake mix aisle.  This stuff is very delicious and rich, perfect for decorating a wedding cake!

Ingredients:
(Makes enough frosting for one large sheet cake)
2 lbs. Powdered Sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup water (room temperature)
2 ½ teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup of butter (must be actual butter, no margarine, works best of butter is room temperature)
Food coloring (if necessary)

Put all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and beat with an electric beater or mixer (will be too thick for a spoon and won’t mix evenly).  Beat until smooth and creamy, this can take awhile.  If the frosting is too thick and stiff to stir properly, try adding a few drops of water.  Just a few drops at a time though, this frosting will not hold up if it’s too thin.
Cover your bowl and use as soon as cake is ready.  After the cake is frosted, keep cake in the refrigerator so the frosting will keep its design.  Take out an hour before serving for frosting and cake to thaw completely.  Remember to make another batch if you want to decorate with more than one color of frosting.

Wilton 601-5580 1/2-Ounce Certified-Kosher Icing Colors, Set of 12Want something besides white?  Of course you can mix in some food coloring, but what about color swirls?  For that, you'll need a color paste- regular food coloring liquid won't work- and line your frosting bag with stripes.  Four long vertical stripes along the inside of the bag with your colors and boom, you look like the Cake Boss.  Click on the pictures for more detail.

Enjoy!

Appetizer idea

Great ideas are out there!  You're not the first person itching to save money on a special occasion so you can benefit from those who have suffered (I mean celebrated) before you.  Check out this great appetizer idea for a wedding reception.  Seems fairly easy to put together a couple of nights before the big day.  Remember, if you're sticking to that small guest list, doing a few of these things won't be too overwhelming and you'll save BIG bucks.

This particular recipe I priced out and for 200 of these mini dessert appetizers, it would cost about $18.  Instead of the wood sticks, I used pretzel sticks which are edible and less likely to be used as a weapon (you never know how these family get-togethers are going to go.)   A cheaper way still would be to substitute the peanut butter truffle and do marshmallows dipped in caramel, then dipped in chocolate, and finally the bottoms rolled in pretzels or crushed peanuts.  Keep an eye out for grocery store sales and coupons then make your decision.  Either way, a pretty easy and fancy treat for your wedding.

Crazy Daisy: Butterfly Wreath

Ok, we're big on saving money on this blog. I mean, there are people who are cheap out there but only I dream of a wedding that costs $500. Now that is cheap.

That doesn't mean your wedding or reception has to be boring or lack glamor. It just means you have to be resourceful! This is a gorgeous wreath made out of- you'll never guess- brown paper lunch bags. No kidding!

So put in your favorite movie, grab a snack, gather your supplies, and print out the instructions on the link below. I've seen people do using the brown paper bags and then spray painting the final product with white spray paint.  This could be so cute as a wreath or, if placed on a table with candles in the center, a centerpiece!

Nevertheless, I think wearing your hair down can be just as pretty as wearing it up. The trick to saving the most amount of money possible is doing your hair yourself or letting a trusted friend take on the responsibility. Here's an interesting link I found for getting "Victoria's Secret" hair.

How to Give Yourself a Manicure

No big surprise that the girl who wrote about how to have a wedding for $500 is a cheapskate, but I'm also practical. I don't mind spending money if it's something I need and I'm getting a valuable service or product for my money, however, I am also a big fan of prioritizing. My parents and my husband's parents were very generous and paid for all of the big stuff we needed at the wedding. I soon realized though that the little leftover detail stuff was going to add up fast and make me very very broke.

So the day before my wedding, I was short on time and cash and needed to prioritize. I ran errands for about 12 hours straight (no joke) and did everything from buy shoes to make the wedding programs. I got my hair cut, I bought a bra, I made a million phone calls and then had to zoom back over to the hotel to shower and dress for the groom's dinner (which I was 45 minutes late to). At the end of the night, I still had a long list of things to do. At midnight, I looked down at my hands and realized I needed a quick manicure. So there I sat, in the lobby of the hotel, applying fake nails and polish to my fingertips. I don't recommend this.

Homedics MAN-150 Style Spa Plus Rechargeable 10 Piece Manicure System with 8 AttachmentsWhat I absolutely do recommend is doing your own manicure. Why not gather all your girls together and make a night of it! Some cheap wine, music, gossip, and nails. Fun!

Click on the link below to get a quick set of directions with pictures on how to do a professional manicure on yourself.  If you have a little extra money, maybe treat yourself to a manicure set like the one pictured.

Quick, easy, cheap - I love it.

Why He Hasn't Proposed (Yet) Weddings: glamour.com

Glamour (1-year auto-renewal)I was on a date one time and the conversation turned to past relationships (always a bad idea on a first date). The guy told me he broke up with his last girlfriend because she started bugging him about when they would get married. I sympathized with him and then asked how long had they dated. Eight years, he said. Eight years???!!!! Dude, I'd be worried if she HADN'T asked you about marriage.

If you're this guy's ex and you want to analyze the past (although something tells me she moved on just fine after this guy) read the article below.

Guest book ideas

The guest book.  My favorite part of the guest book is the person assigned to do this job.  They are usually wondering, along with everyone else, what exactly their role is supposed to be.  Smile and hand over the pen.  Actually, if the messages from guests are important to your memories of the day, guest book attendants are important simply because people need to be reminded to sign the darn thing.  Most of us will walk right by it unless someone shoves a pen in our face.  So grab that college roommate and put her to work!

24x36 Picture Frame / Poster Frame 1" Wide Matte Black, 24x36 (N1WB3)Melissa Doug Educational Toy MultiColored Chalk SticksFolkArt 2517 8-Ounce Chalkboard Paint, Black

Have you seen the price on formal guest books?  A little too much for me, and you if you're looking to spend around $500 on a wedding.  So let's take a look at some different ideas compared to the traditional guest book.

A friend of mine had people sign a chalk board.  Actually it was a large piece of plywood painted with chalkboard paint.  The "guest book" attendant had everyone sign their name and a message then carefully put the board somewhere safe.  After the party, the bride and groom sprayed the board with an adhesive, then painted over the messages with a clear gloss.  A simple homemade frame and it was a unique piece of art for their home.  Simple and cheap too!

I've seen this same idea with a piece of poster board, which is about 50 cents at any store that sells school or office supplies.  Have everyone sign the poster board, then purchase a frame and hang it in your house when you come back from your honeymoon!  A poster frame will cost somewhere around $15 and you can purchase it at a later date rather than add it to your wedding budget.

Bormioli Fido Clear Square Canning Jar 1.5 Liter
Another idea I've seen is Message-In-A-Jar.  Scraps of paper are placed in a basket with pens.  Guests write their message and names on the papers, then place them in a glass jar.  After the party, the jar is sealed and given to the couple.  They can open it later that day at home, or save it for their anniversary.  Cheap and easy?  Definitely, I mean, how much does scratch paper and a glass jar cost?

Finally, an actual guest book is great too if you can find a deal!  Keep your eye open for blank journals that could work as a guest book for half the price.  Especially look for these deals during back-to-school sales.

Programs

So this might sound strange to you, but designing a wedding ceremony program was one of my favorite activities when I was planning my wedding.  I absolutely loved it.  The layout, who had what roles, the kind of paper I used, how it would be presented, picking out a quote, etc.  I loved it.  Truthfully, if you had a million dollars and seven wedding planners to help you prepare for your big day I'd still recommend doing this part yourself.  It's just a great way to see exactly what's going on and when and with what members of the bridal party.  Plus, you have to do one.  Guests will feel SO MUCH better if they know exactly what kind of time they'll be spending sitting still and being quiet.  A lot of people bring them home, they read it during the ceremony, they use it as a fan if the church is hot, they use it as a coloring book for bored children, it's perfect for blotting lipstick or discreetly gossiping about your second cousin's elective surgery.  Just do it.

Here's some tips to get you started.  First, pick out some nice paper but paper that can be printed on.  Your best bet to keep down costs is to put your entire design on a regular piece of white printing paper and then take it to the copy shop and have them make the copies on some high-end paper.  Stick to black, white, and gray ink if possible.  You may not need the heavy duty stock paper, decide what design you're doing first.  The content of the program should include the following:
Grosgrain Ribbon Dots Group 27 Rolls 3/8", 27 Yards
  • Order of the wedding (names of songs and readings, declaration of intent, exchange of vows, blessings, recessional)
  • Participants (parents, couple, bridal party, minister, etc.)
  • Other information (couple's new address, honeymoon plans, thank you message)
Now you've got the guts of the program, how about the design?  My favorite (also probably the cheapest and easiest) is to put the whole thing on one sheet, have it printed on regular paper in one of your wedding colors, roll it up, tie it in a bow with some ribbon or twine and place them in a basket at the front of the church by the guest book.  Cheap, simple, easy, elegant - it's perfect.

Are favors silly to you?

I have mixed feelings on wedding favors.  Personally, I've seen some awful favors.  Just plain random things that were featured in the wedding colors with the couples name plastered everywhere.  I'm not criticizing their taste (well maybe I am a little) but I'm wondering why they put down so much money on something people wouldn't be likely to use.

SPORK Flatware 4-Pack - Assorted ColorsNow, in recent years, I've seen some outstanding favors.  Things that you wouldn't expect but where very cool, unique, and practical.  The first one that comes to mind is a friend of mine who got married on a local beach in the summer.  Everything was so beautiful and the reception was perfect.  Pizza buffet, candy bar, salad, bread, bottles of wine - it was cozy and very cute.  Her favors?  Our eating utensils.  On each table were cups of these high-end sporks in cute modern colors.  You used them for dinner and then put them in your purse before you left the party.  (Don't worry, I asked, we were supposed to take them home.)  At the end of the night, there were several people who didn't take their sporks so I grabbed them and they are a HUGE hit with my kids.

Footcandy Pedicure Flip Flops 24-pair packAnother favor I have noticed is the flip flop.  I absolutely LOVE this because I'm not a girl who is used to heels.  In fact, I don't get dressed up much so when I'm invited to a wedding I go all the way: black dress, hoop earrings, high heels, cocktail purse, heck I even wash my hair.  But by dinner time, I'm hurting.  Mostly my feet are hurting.  I'll never forget the first time I saw the baskets full of flip flops.  Immediately the wedding reception jumped into my top five list.  Picture it:  Dinner is over, the band is setting up, people are getting out of their seats, walking towards the reception area and - what's this? - BASKETS FULL OF FLIP FLOPS.  Flip flops for men, women, kids.  It was glorious.  All different colors and patterns.  I grabbed a pair and felt as if I'd instantly been given three espressos.  I was ready to go!!!  Two summers later, I'm still wearing the flip flops.

Now for the flip flops, really any of the favors, remember that to save the most amount of money you'll want to start early.  Flip flops, for example, go on sale big time in the fall and you could spend a buck or less on a pair.  The link posted above is a pack of 24 that is priced for less than $30.  That's a pretty good deal too.  This is a great way to get people to help too!  When someone says, "Do you need help with anything?"  You say yes, keep an eye out for flip flops on clearance.

Tassimo Winner!!!

Okay, so after a busy week, I wanted to announce the winner of the Tassimo T20! I figured since I announced the drawing on video, I should announce the winner on video!

{Excuse the exhausted look, I have been up and working since 5AM, and it's now 7PM...and I don't have on any makeup, and look re-donky-donnk,.... plus I didn't think you'd all care, since you all just want to see who won, right...}

So watch the video and see already!

Free centerpiece

My sister-in-law was married a few years ago and she had this beautiful and very inexpensive decoration, free if you pull together a few easy resources.  She had some branches, big thin long branches and placed them in a tall vase (a tall skinny ice bucket would do, try and borrow this item if you don't have something that will work).

The vase was in her wedding color green and a pink ribbon tied around the top.  There were family wedding picture ornaments hanging from each of the branches.  The ornaments were simple, small black and white photocopies of the relative's wedding pictures glued to pretty stock paper and fastened to matching ribbons.  She placed it by the guest book and a couple of big bowls of candy.  People would see it right away and then look at it more closely throughout the night.  Great idea!

Martha Stewart's Thoughtful Tree has a design similar to this but she uses it for a guest book/wish book.  I think now with all of the different papers you can buy in a craft store, this is a pretty do-able idea that wouldn't cost a fortune.  The picture below can be inspiration for either a centerpiece, like my sister-in-law's, or for a well wishing tree.
